Urien Rakarth is, in my totally unbiased opinion, the best model Games Workshop have produced.  The Studio model was painted by "Eavy Metal's" Neil Green, although for my model I have followed the steps of Anja Wettergren.

Rather than do a full step by step for this model, I am going to explain how the flesh was painted.  Duncan Rhodes from the GW Studio Army painters has a very effective quick method for doing flesh on the covens which I have used for my Wracks, Grotesques and Talos (And the results are great).  However, for Rakarth - being a special character, I have spent more time and attention to detail and so Anja's method has been used.

Like most of the models painted, several thin layers built up on top of each other is the method used - so plenty of Medium is used, almost in equal measure to the paint.   If you have the Eavy Metal standard brush then this is probably the best brush to use.  If you have the money then go to an art shop and get yourself a high quality sable brush.

Step 1
Start with a Chaos Black undercoat (Abaddon Black).
Now make a mix of 1:1 Tallarn Flesh and Space Wolves Grey (Cadian Flesh Tone & Fenrisian Grey).  Apply this to the whole of the flesh areas in about 3 thin layers.  You will probably see the black undercoat through it - that's good, it means your layer is thin enough.

Step 2
Now make a Dark Flesh glaze (Doombull Brown).  To make a glaze mix 1 part paint and 5 parts water.  Then to get the paint consistency back add 1 part medium.  Test it on some spare plastic before applying.  It should have a milky consistency and when dry you should be able to see the colour underneath slightly.

Once dry apply a wash of Devlan Mud (Agrax Earthshade) into the recesses and let it dry thoroughly.

Step 3
Now create a mid-tone of 1:1:1 Tallarn Flesh, Space Wolves Grey and Skull White (Cadian Flesh Tone, Fenrisian Grey and White Scar).  Paint this on in several thin layers and try to avoid filling in the recesses.

Step 4
Add more Skull White (White Scar) to the mix - about a brush blob should do.  Add a bit more medium too and then apply several thin highlights over the flesh.

Step 5
Now make a Leviathan Purple Glaze (Druchi Violet).  This is 1 part wash, 4 parts water and 1 part medium.
Apply this into every recess you can possibly find on the skin.  As it drys you will see the layers underneath starting to show through creating a slightly bruised look.

Step 6
A final highlight of Skull White (White Scar) was then applied to the most prominent parts of the flesh.  Again apply several thin layers and gradually get closer to the edges with each highlight layer.

And that's it.  It will take you some time, but the results are worth it.  As for how I did the liquid effect in the vials - that's for another day Smile

To see how phenomenally good Neil Green's brush work is see below to view his painted model of Rakarth
